The two main components of a open-channel UV disinfection unit are the UV lamp and the quartz sleeve.

Maintaining a winter open-channel UV disinfection system is a relatively straightforward task. Each year, only a few minor items require attention. Below are the basic guidelines for maintaining an open-channel UV disinfection system, as well as some steps you can take to ensure it effectively eliminates biological contaminants from the water.

Your two main components— the lamp and the quartz sleeve.

In this system, only two components—namely, the lamp and the quartz sleeve—require periodic replacement or cleaning. Depending on how frequently you use the system (for example, if you turn it off because the system is located in a seasonal residence and the UV system isn't used continuously throughout the year), you may be able to schedule maintenance less often.

  Ultraviolet lamp

If the UV system is used continuously, the UV lamp should be replaced annually. Due to the nature of ultraviolet lamps, over time, the output of germicidal ultraviolet C light decreases, making them less effective at killing microorganisms in water. Replacing the UV lamp annually can help prevent this issue. Be sure to use a lamp from the same manufacturer as your system.

Using lamps from non-manufacturers may seem cheaper, but it could lead to problems, hinder proper disinfection, and—worse yet—may void your system’s warranty.

  Quartz sleeve

The second element requiring maintenance is the quartz sleeve. The quartz sleeve is a component of the UV system; it protects the lamp from direct contact with water and transmits ultraviolet light into the water. Over time, due to the accumulation of minerals in the water, this sleeve can become dirty or cloudy.

When the sleeve becomes cloudy or contaminated, it won't transmit the full UV dose to the water, and your system won't function effectively. Cleaning the sleeve is straightforward—simply use a mineral-removal product such as CLR. Once the sleeve has been thoroughly cleaned, it can be reinstalled in the system and will be ready to perform its job.

If your sleeves are extremely dirty or difficult to clean, consider replacing them. Sleeves can last a long time, but they must remain transparent to ensure proper transmission of the ultraviolet light emitted by the lamp and the disinfecting solution. It may be necessary to replace the sleeves, but this isn't difficult to do. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure that the lamp and sleeve are replaced correctly.
