What are the characteristics of the horizontal and vertical modules of open-channel UV disinfection systems?
2021-03-23
The specially designed, high-efficiency, high-intensity, and long-life UV-C light source (T254nm) in the open-channel UV disinfection unit emits powerful ultraviolet light that irradiates water or air. When bacteria and viruses in water or air pass through the UV-C irradiation zone, the ultraviolet light penetrates their cell membranes and nuclei, breaking the molecular bonds of nucleic acids (DNA or RNA), thereby disabling their ability to replicate or rendering them inactive. Since the cells cannot replicate, the microorganisms soon die, achieving the goal of eliminating all bacteria and viruses in water or air without the use of any chemical agents.
The open-channel UV wastewater disinfection system is primarily used for disinfection in municipal wastewater treatment plants, residential community wastewater treatment, reclaimed water reuse, industrial wastewater disinfection, and rainwater disinfection. The system adopts a modular design, with the size and dosage of each module specifically customized according to varying treatment capacities and water quality conditions. These disinfection modules are then placed inside the disinfection channel, forming a complete disinfection system together with other onshore components and the PLC control unit. Depending on usage conditions and structural characteristics, this system can be further categorized into horizontal-channel type and vertical-channel type. So, what exactly are the specific features of these two types of modules? Let’s take a brief look at them now!
Horizontal module features:
The materials used for the horizontal modules are all made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Moreover, the lamp sockets, power sockets, and UV lamp wiring throughout the entire system are completely enclosed within the UV lamp module assembly, ensuring they remain shielded from exposure to wastewater and UV light. In particular, the entire module support structure is fabricated from 304 stainless steel and installed above open-channel wastewater. Each module is designed independently and does not need to be rigidly secured or suspended directly above the wastewater in the open channel. Consequently, when it comes to replacing the lamps or quartz sleeves, each module can be lifted individually without affecting the other modules. The module lamp holder design incorporates the latest patented technology, which fully conforms to hydrodynamic principles and increases the effective flow area, thereby significantly reducing head loss across the UV module. At the same time, this design boasts excellent sealing performance, maximizing operational safety.
Vertical module features:
The vertical UV disinfection module is installed vertically within the disinfection channel, with its lamp arrangement oriented perpendicular to the flow direction of the water. All lamps are arranged in a staggered, uniform pattern, parallel to each other and forming a plum-blossom-shaped cross-section. This design offers the following advantages:
1. The sealed ends of all lamps and sleeves are kept out of water. When inspecting or replacing lamps, individual lamps can be removed directly without having to lift the entire module first—making the process extremely convenient.
2. Since the sealed end of the casing is not submerged in water, we can prevent water from entering the casing, thereby significantly improving the operating conditions of the lamp tube and further extending its service life.
3. When the water flow rate changes, the UV lamps can be turned off individually by module or even row as needed, making it easier to save energy.
4. The staggered arrangement of the lamps is more conducive to generating turbulent flow in the water, ensuring a more uniform distribution of UV light intensity and thereby enhancing the lamps' efficiency and disinfection effectiveness.
5. The structure submerged below the water surface consists only of the lamp casing, which offers minimal resistance to the water body, resulting in very low overall water loss for the module.
