How to Choose the Right UV Disinfectant
2021-03-23
First, people need to understand that in a recirculating water system, the UV light input power, the flow rate of the recirculating water, and the UV254 transmittance of the water are the three key factors that affect the effectiveness of ultraviolet disinfection.
The greater the UV light output power of a water treatment system, the higher the actual disinfection effect; the larger the water flow rate through the UV lamp sterilizer, the greater the overall disinfection effect; and the higher the UV254 transmittance, the more effective the disinfection.
I. Water Output
Under conditions where the use of ultraviolet light is necessary, microbial species such as bacteria, viruses, and algae will have their cells damaged—and thus be eliminated—only when they are exposed to ultraviolet light for a sufficient duration.
The factor that affects the contact time between harmful microbial strains and ultraviolet light is the water flow rate: the greater the total flow rate, the shorter the contact time; the smaller the total flow rate, the longer the contact time. Different flow rates require different UV output powers to achieve the required disinfection standards.
Therefore, when selecting a UV disinfection unit, you should choose it based on the water flow rate, typically taking into account the disinfection and sterilization requirements for the peak total flow.
II. Water Body Characteristics
The key property of water bodies to consider is the ultraviolet transmittance (UVT). The UVT of water determines the extent to which ultraviolet light can penetrate through it. Pathogens in water must be exposed to sufficient amounts of short-wave ultraviolet light to be completely inactivated. By collecting water samples using a calcite cuvette and then passing ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 254 nanometers through the samples, we can accurately determine the water’s UVT.
3. Microbial strains that must be inactivated
Different microbial strains in water exhibit varying degrees of resistance to ultraviolet light. Therefore, different doses of short-wave UV light are required to inactivate different microbial strains. To properly select and manufacture UV disinfectors based on specific circumstances, it is essential first to identify which pathogens need to be inactivated.
